Diary of Thomas Paine, 1715.

Negative photostatic copy of original diary held by the Yale University Library. Diary kept by Thomas Paine in an interleaved almanac. Regularly recorded are observations on the weather, including the direction of the wind; included is a table for shorthand characters used by Paine to denote the weather. Additional entries are short, near-daily activities, including illness and travel. Notes at the beginning of the diary appear to indicate initials used throughout the diary as shorthand for sermons and lectures heard.

Samuel Mather (1677-1746) was a member of a prominent Connecticut family. He was born in Branford, Connecticut in 1677; his parents were the Reverend Samuel and Hannah (Treat) Mather. Thomas Paine, minister and merchant, was born on April 9, 1694, to James and Bethiah (Thacher) Paine in Barnstable, Massachusetts. He received his Harvard AB in 1717. After graduation, he taught school in Andover until 1718 while studying theology. From 1718-1719, he was a scholar of the house at Harvard, during which time he produced astronomical almanacs.
